The Summer of Love That Never Was: The Imperial Dogs bite back

Once upon a time, or circa early ’70s to be somewhat precise, there was a band called the Imperial Dogs. They were a bunch of South Bay (Redondo Beach, etc.) fellas, a pack of long-tressed, rockily dressed rock-loving rockhounds/party boys and pot-smoking wildmen and, actually, totally ace musicians in a balls-out, true-rock, rock-rock-rockin’ way…

Documentary Film ‘This is the Life’: How Leimert Park Changed the Face of Music

The documentary – that premiered to a nationwide audience on Showtime – chronicles the underground scene that sprouted Freestyle Fellowship (Myka 9, Aceyalone, Self Jupiter, Peace), Chali2na, Medusa, Ellay Khule, Chillin Villain Empire, Volume Ten, Pigeon John & more.

The health food spot called the Good Life Café in Leimert Park hosted freestyle hip-hop battles that started the West Coast sound still influential – emulated and alive- today.

ArtCard the ‘postal service’ Art Project: Los Angeles, CA

Great news! ArtCard has finally started to gain momentum. The citywide mail art collaboration has attracted over one hundred and twenty artists from across Los Angeles and is showcasing artwork from twenty five different neighborhoods.

European Street Artists: Downtown Los Angeles

JR and Vhils took to the 600 block of Spring Street for two large murals facing each other in a narrow parking lot (permission was received). JR is from France and is known for his known for his large photographs that “highlight humanist matters that are often overlooked.” Portuguese artist Vhils likes to manipulate surfaces, as he did in the portrait of a man by chipping away at the building for a bas-relief effect.
