About the LA-Artist Doc Project
The LA-Artist Documentary Project is dedicated to people working creatively in and around Los Angeles. The ongoing, collaborative project aims to document LA's artistic diversity by producing a range of informative onine films alongside an archive of ArtCards that bring voice to the city’s varied and eclectic creative framework.
ArtCard is a grassroots community art project that envisions a city-wide collaboration among people who live and/or work in the incredibly dynamic city of Los Angeles. The project endeavors to encourage Angelinos to create an original piece of art using the ‘postcard’ as ‘canvas.’ There are no guidelines: the work may be submitted by couples, groups, or individuals. More ArtCards means a better representation of LA’s broad creative spectrum. We want to see LA expressing its multiplicity by producing these ArtCards that will be archived online for the city/world to enjoy and remember.
In conjunction with ArtCards, LA-Artist is an online film series that introduces the creative lives of a potpourri of passionate, dedicated and relatively unknown LA based artists. Director Oliver Shipley wants to focus on documenting the creative process as well as the ideologies influencing these artists in a city where it’s often hard to get a break in the art world.
Artists are selected from all over the city to represent their area of creative expression. Photography, fine art, sand sculpture, graffiti, performance and murals are just a few of the disciplines that will be documented.
The project, as a whole, is looking to lay bare Los Angeles’ artistic diversity, processes, influences and draw attention to everyday artistic talents. We plan to do so with a series of 12 online film which engage these topics, and through the ArtCard postal service project.
